IMMORTALITY OF MAN’S SOUL
Is Man’s soul immortal and imperishable? Yes, it is, though some religious sects do not agree with the immortality of man’s soul. They believed there is absolutely nothing about the immortality of the soul of man. They read some verses of the scripture in isolation and thus misinterpreted them. They include scriptures such as ‘the soul that sinneth, it shall die.’ (Ezek 18:4); “what man is he that liveth and shall not see death; shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave?” (Psa 89:48); etc. They think man will die just like an animal and when he is dead, he will be non-existent as a soulless animal.
The truth about man’s soul is succinctly expounded in the book of 1st Corinthians: “Behold, I tell you a mystery, we shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on in-corruption and this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Cor 15:51-53). This means that the dead will resurrect from death not with the old perishable body of dust but with new imperishable body that endures into eternity.
Therefore, when death comes to a man, his mortal part, which is the body, dies, but the immortal part, the soul, goes away unharmed and undestroyed, withdrawing from death. “Marvel not at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of damnation. (John 5:28-29). “And I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish–” (John 10:28).
Jesus said, do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul but fear Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matt 10:28); to destroy the soul is to ban to hell fire. It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. (Heb 9:27). So, when the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that “death is swallowed up in victory.” Therefore, the soul of man goes beyond death, it lives on into eternity either in heaven for justification or in hell for damnation. So, there is life after death!
